1901 - 1930 1906: The Wright's home, "Red Gate Lodge", was built next to Guffy's original stone house near the lake. 1908: The San Bernardino and San Gabriel National Forests were consolidated under a single administration and became the Angeles National Forest. 1910: Sumner Wright, Buford Wright and Bob Smith (Kate Wright's brother-in-law) formed the Circle Mountain Cattle Company. 1910: The first school was located between Wright's ranch and the first ranger station, "Green Gate", at the head of Heath Creek. The school was later abandoned for lack of enrollment. 1912: The "Trackless Trolley" project from the Mormon-Rocks Grava station to a proposed subdivision at the top of Lone Pine Canyon began construction. The project ended in the 1920's with only seven miles of track completed. 1916: Henry Johnson established the Sheep Creek Water Company bringing water from the mouth of Sheep Creek in Wrightwood to Phelan in the desert below via handmade cement pipes. 1919: The Wrights sold the Circle Mountain Cattle Company to Irving and Emory Kidd who operated it until the 1930's 1924: The Big Pines Recreation Park, a Los Angeles County winter and summer playground, officially opened. 1924: Sumner Wright subdivided his property into lots for home sites. Later, Wright would lose all his property to the bank after numerous legal battles. 1925: The Tradin' Post was opened and operated by George Richardson. It was the market, hardware store, gas station equipment rental store and post office for the community. 1925: Charlotte (Momma) Sears, a nurse and wife of Warren Sears, sales representative for Wrightwood, provided the only medical care for the community. 1925: The Wrightwood Zephyr, a small news magazine, was edited by Mary Myrtle Hiltabrand whose daughter was the first woman ranger at Big Pines. 1926: A unique business, the Skyline Silver Fox Farm, was owned and operated by Ernest and Donna Schuyler (school teacher). 1926: Adolf Knuckles, Sumner Wright's former ranch foreman, became the Superintendent of the Wrightwood Water District (incorporated as the Swarthout Valley Water Company in 1936) and kept the position until his retirement in 1941. 1926: William Bristol, designer of the Sunkist trademark, built the unique Acorn Lodge using all natural materials found in the area. 1926: The Smithsonian Institute constructed an observatory on Table Mountain to conduct soloar research. It is now operated by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory where scientific investigation into the solar system continues. 1928: Telephone service initially provided to Wrightwood and Big Pines. The Wrightwood school district was formed and the bunkhouse from Wright's ranch was moved to a new location and becoming the schoolhouse. Twelve children were enrolled and Grace Aldrich was the teacher. 1930: The Davidson Arch, a pedestrian overpass, was presented to Los Angeles County for the entrance to Big Pines Park by William Davidson. |
