1851 - 1900 1851: Nathan and Truman Swarthout homesteaded in Lone Pine Canyon. They later moved up to the valley which now bears their name. 1863: Almon Clyde filed claim on the first Swarthout homestead in Lone Pine Canyon. The Clyde's were inlaws to Wyatt and Virgil Earp who visited the ranch every now and again. 1886: Harry Heath homesteaded the eastern part of the Swarthout Valley. He ran a dairy and planted orchards. He frequently took in travelers through the area. 1888: Samuel McGuffy (Guffy), a prospector, built a stone cabin and homesteaded in a clearing near a small lake in the middle of the valley. 1890: Sumner Wright bought forty acres, including the the stone cabin from 'Guffy'. Wright planted apple orchards and introduced cattle ranching to the valley and eventually expanded his holdings to 3,300 acres. 1892: The San Gabriel Timberland Reserve (San Gabriel National Forest) was the first forest land in California and the second in the nation (following Yellowstone) to be protected by federal law. 1895: 'Tom Vincent', discovered the Bighorn gold mine on the east face of 'South Baldy' mountain (Mt Baden-Powell). The Bighorn became known as the 'Grand-daddy of the San Gabriel gold mines. |
